On September 13, 2024, long term care homes across Ontario celebrated the first ever LTC Community Engagement Day. This special day was created to bring elected officials and community partners together to meet residents, staff and families. It was a great opportunity to showcase the vital role long term care homes play in our community and to explore how we can continue improving care as the needs of seniors continue to evolve.
Caressant Care was thrilled to have eight of our homes participate in this milestone event, each showcasing the incredible work they have done for seniors in our communities. Throughout the day, activities ranged from hosting tours and welcoming residents’ families, to sharing some of the exciting innovations we’ve introduced to meet the growing needs of our community.
At Caressant Care Arthur, we welcomed John Nater, MP Perth-Wellington, and Andy Lennox, Mayor Wellington North, for a tour and the chance to meet with our residents, their families, and staff. It was a great opportunity to discuss the vital role long term care plays in supporting seniors, innovations at our home, challenges and opportunities to meet the growing needs of our local community.
A special highlight of the day was when Mr. Nater personally presented a certificate to one of our long-term residents, Olga Tombs, in celebration of her 100th birthday. When asked by Mr. Nater what her secret was to living such a long and happy life, Olga humorously replied, “Breathing.” Her sense of humor never fails to bring a smile to those around her and we feel incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful resident.
Over at Caressant Care Listowel, John Nater, MP for Perth-Wellington, joined the action and helped serve lunch to our residents! MP Nater had the opportunity to tour the home, engage with residents, speak with staff and have meaningful discussions on the challenges facing long term care homes. It was an exceptional day that brought smiles to everyone.
At Caressant Care Maples, we were delighted to host Mayor Phil Schaefer and Deputy Mayor Brad Smith. A personal tour was given by Joan Hergott, Executive Director of Caressant Care Maples, who showcased the exceptional quality of care and person-centered living that our residents enjoy at the home. Throughout their visit, residents and staff had the opportunity to discuss challenges the home has faced and the insightful solution the home has implemented.
Other highlights from LTC Engagement Day include Ric Bresee, MPP for Hastings—Lennox and Addington, visiting Caressant Care Marmora; Jamie Schmale, MP for Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes—Brock, stopping by Caressant Care McLaughlin; Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford, making a visit to Caressant Care Woodstock; Cheryl Gallant, MP for Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke, joining us at Caressant Care Cobden; and MP Jaimie Schmale, paying a visit to Caressant Care Lindsay.
Caressant Care is thankful to all the local leaders who took the time to visit our homes and engage with our residents, staff and families. This meaningful opportunity allowed us to emphasize the importance of long term care in our community and share insights on how we can continue to meet the needs of our local seniors.
